Fabric of India

Recently Julian Blair from Rug Maker and Ptolemy Mann, a contemporary textile artist visited Varanasi, India.

The main purpose of the trip was to expand our popular range of hand made gelim rugs designed by Ptolemy.

Varanasi is ‘real’ India, one is assaulted by heat, constant ‘Oxford street’ crowds, life and death on the river Ganges  and colour, which inspires all our rugs.

All our Gelims are hand made form 100% wool and each piece from the dying of the wool to weaving and then washing takes six weeks

Our new Hot Spice colours have been inspired by the textiles one sees every day in the villages and towns of Uttar Pradesh

Specifically chosen by the British Library, Rug Maker have been granted an exclusive license to reproduce artwork by John Tenniel from the Library’s original collections. The exclusive new range offers the perfect way to introduce the captivating appeal of the well-known literary classic into interiors.

Transform the iconic rugs into art by displaying them on the wall for an eye-catching decorative centrepiece that is a guaranteed conversation starter at every Mad Hatter’s tea party. Skillfully handcrafted from 100% New Zealand wool, the artwork for ‘The White Rabbit’ and ‘Alice, Drink Me’ rugs has been taken from the original first edition of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The new collection pays close attention to detail, featuring the instantly recognisable ‘Drink Me’ bottle and pocket watch that appear throughout the timeless children’s book.

The monochrome designs are hand woven in the Kathmandu valley in Nepal by highly skilled Tibetan and Nepalese weavers who hand knot Swiss aniline dyed New Zealand wool onto cotton warps and wefts. Rug Maker are supporters of ‘GoodWeave’, a global non-profit organisation that assure child labour is not used in the manufacturing process of these rugs.
